Summer is a great time to do a little preventative maintenance on your roof to help prolong its lifespan and prevent any unexpected roof repair. We have put together a short list of roof maintenance tips to help you best care for your roof.

Inspect gutters and downspouts-

To ensure water can properly flow through your gutter system be sure to inspect them at least once during the summer and clean them out if blocked up with sticks, leaves, or other debris. To check your downspout for any clogging you may need to use a small bucket of water and simply make sure the water flows out at a steady rate and away from the foundation of your home.

Check the roof valleys-

When out doing yard work, simply take a minute to look at your roof and inspect the roof valleys for any debris that may be present. If there is, be sure to take some time to clear it out. Roof valleys also play an important role in draining water off your roof. Any material blocking the valleys could potentially hold water in place cause unwanted damage to your roof.

Check ventilation systems-

With summers on the lake shore having the potential to bring extremely warm temperatures, be sure to check your roofs ventilation system for any blockages at least once in the summer. It is important to ensure that air can flow freely to prevent mold/mildew growth and loss of energy efficiency.

Inspect your roof after a large storm-

After a large summer storm rolls through, be sure to take some time and check for missing or damaged shingles, the gutter system for any damage, and also check for any leaking or water spots in the attic. Getting a small problem fixed quickly can prevent larger roof repairs from being need down the road.

Repair early-

If you are going to do any cleaning or roof repair, try and do it as early in the morning as possible to avoid the mid afternoon heat.
